Denley Hydraulics have been successfully servicing and maintaining the Electro Hydraulic System powering the Falkirk Wheel for almost 15 years.
The impressive design of the wheel, which is now major Scottish landmark, transfers canal boats between two canals with 35 metres difference in height.
The structure houses a self-contained pump room which in turn houses a Hydraulic Power Unit incorporating a pair of hydraulic pumps that drive the hydraulic motors. The motors drive a gear system to reduce the rotation speed of the wheel allowing a smooth controlled rotation of the axle. Power is supplied directly to the axle by 10 hydraulic motors, which also act as brakes.
The system has been kept running smoothly by Denley engineers who did the system design and installation back in 2002 and maintain it to this day.
Why not take a trip to Falkirk to experience the wheel and see how hydraulics is applied to civil projects.
